MUGELLO RACE DIRECTOR ANTONIO CANU AHEAD OF THE FOURTH ROUND OF THE 2024 SEASON: ‘WE CAN'T WAIT!

For the first time since 2019, the Ultimate Cup European Series returns to the Mugello circuit. The Tuscan circuit is preparing to host the fourth round of the 2024 season. Antonio Canu, the circuit's race director, reveals how much he is looking forward to hosting the championship.

The Ultimate Cup European Series comes to Mugello for the second time in its history. How does it feel to be back with the championship?

We are very happy to host this race after several years. The programme is very interesting. We are looking forward to participating.

The category has evolved enormously since 2019. Have you followed these changes?

Yes. We like this type of race because there is a lot of action on the track with many different cars. We have had several meetings with the organisation to prepare ourselves as best we can.

Inaugurated in 1914, Mugello is one of the oldest circuits in Italy. How has the circuit evolved in 110 years?

The layout of the circuit has not changed since its opening. The most iconic corners, which inevitably best represent our circuit, are Arrabbiata 1 and 2. These are very fast and technical sections, where there is very little visibility coming out of the circuit. These are very fast and technical sections, where visibility exiting the circuit is very reduced.

What are the other key points?

There is the long straight of over a kilometre that leads to the difficult San Donato turn 1. At the end of sector 1, the drivers have to connect two chicanes: a very fast one and a narrower one.

In addition to the Arrabbiata, which we have just mentioned, turn 10 is very interesting. Scarperia is much more difficult than it looks. Finally, tackling the last parabolica in the right way is crucial if you want to arrive at the finish line with a good speed.

Do you have a personal anecdote to tell us about your years at Mugello?

In the 1990s, the Scuderia Ferrari used to come here very often for testing. At least once a month, the team would come with Michael Schumacher. We talked to him often and had a good relationship. He is an exceptional person.

Do you have any words for our drivers and teams?

We are looking forward to it! We hope the event will be good, that they will enjoy the track and also have time to visit Mugello and Florence.
